The Georgia State Patrol has revealed that two Auburn drivers died following a car crash in Barrow County on July 17.
They have been identified as 25-year-old Jacob Peek and 28-year-old Zachary Smith.
Peek was an Auburn resident and Police Department officer. He was off-duty at the time of the crash.
Two women and a man were traveling in car of the Auburn resident and police officer while a man was in the car with Smith. All four passengers sustained severe injuries.
Troopers responded to the accident shortly after midnight and found both drivers dead at the scene.
All the passengers were taken to Northside Hospital Gwinnett with serious injuries, according to officials. None of the injured people were named.
Investigators determined that Peek lost control of his silver Ford Mustang on Carl-Midway Road and struck an oncoming black Toyota Corolla. It is not yet known why Peek lost control of his car and went into the southbound lane.
However, GSP spokesman Lt. Mark Riley said the investigation into the crash is ongoing.
Prior to joining the Auburn Police Department, Peek was a member of the Winder Police Department.
His memorial service is planned for 4 p.m. on July 24 in the chapel of the Smith Funeral Home in Winder.
Smith’s funeral service will take place at 2 p.m. on July 23 in the chapel of Flanigan Funeral Home in Buford.
