The DeKalb County Police Department has reported that one person was killed and another suffered injuries in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 285 on Thursday morning, April 8. The accident occurred close to Flat Shoals Parkway around 2:45 a.m.
Police investigations revealed that a female driver reportedly caused the crash on Interstate 285. She was allegedly driving against the flow of traffic on the interstate when she struck a vehicle and caused it to hit another car.
The driver of the second vehicle died as a result of his injuries. He has been identified as 31-year-old Kevin Fitzpatrick.
The driver of the third car is expected to be okay. Police did not disclose the individual’s name.
Meanwhile, the unnamed female driver was transported to a hospital in critical condition. Police say she’ll face charges of reckless driving and felony vehicular homicide.
Fitzpatrick’s family told the media he was making his way to work when he was killed. They said he was a hard worker who had just been promoted.
The family is questioning how the driver was able to enter the interstate and go the wrong way.
The authorities haven’t specified where the woman entered the freeway but there are no-turn signs posted at the Flat Shoals entrance to eastbound I-285.
The crash caused the closure of the interstate for around four hours and led to severe congestion during the morning. The Perimeter reopened around 7 a.m.
