A 38-year-old man is dead following a fatal Charlotte crash that occurred on Sunday afternoon in the 11000 block of Johnston Road, off Pineville-Matthews Road in south Charlotte, NC.
Police say an impaired driver was speeding and he lost control of this SUV, crossed a median, and then struck another vehicle head-on in the fatal Charlotte crash. The driver of the second vehicle was killed.
The crash occurred just after 4 pm.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said 46-year-old Ryan Thomas Minch was heading north on Johnston Road at a high rate of speed.
He lost control of his 2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer, went over the median, and struck a silver 2010 Toyota Yaris.
The driver of the Yaris was identified as 38-year-old Gustavo Leobardo Lopez-Cuarez. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Minch was treated at an area hospital and then taken into police custody. He is facing charges of felony death by vehicle, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, and having an open alcoholic beverage.
CMPD is still actively investigating the crash and anyone who witnessed it has been asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
Meanwhile, an altercation led to a fatal crash in Lumberton on Sunday.
The Robeson County Sheriff’s Office said the victim, 40-year-old James Phillips, was involved in an altercation with the occupants of another vehicle.
Deputies and N.C. State Highway Patrol troopers responded to the collision that occurred in the 9000 block of Old Whiteville Road around 2:06 a.m.
Phillips was found dead at the scene while the occupants of a second vehicle sustained minor injuries.
The Sheriff’s Office did not reveal any details about the altercation.
