Two deputies with the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office were killed in a wreck on Interstate 20 on Tuesday. They have been identified as Anthony White and Kenny Ingram.
The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office said the two deputies killed were in a Dodge Charger that rear-ended a tractor-trailer that had stopped in the left eastbound lane shortly after 11:10 a.m.
The crash occurred at Lewiston Road and it resulted in the closure of all lanes of eastbound I-20.
White was a seven-year veteran who joined the Sheriff’s Office in 2012 while Ingram had spent almost 15 years in law enforcement.
The sheriff’s office revealed that the two officers were going to pick up an inmate for transfer to the Fulton County Jail when the accident occurred.
Sheriff Ted Jackson said White and Ingraham had a profound sense of duty and their loss was devastating.
The deadly crash occurred on the same day that a memorial service was held in Augusta for Richmond County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Charles Norton. He died as a result of complications from the novel coronavirus.
According to the Georgia Department of Transportation, the area where the accident occurred was targeted for a maintenance project that was set to start on Tuesday.
The work was expected to have resulted in only the closure of the right lane and it is not clear if the crash was in any way related to the project.
Reports indicate that an accident reconstruction team is assisting in the investigation along with motor carrier compliance officials.
Another deadly crash occurred later on Tuesday about ten miles to the west of the original crash site. This accident also happened on the eastbound side of I-20 and it involved nine vehicles.
