Interstate-20 in Atlanta was closed for four hours this morning following a fatal accident near Joseph E. Lowery Boulevard. Man killed while crossing interstate-20, apparently, a man was trying to cross the highway when he was struck by a car.
The man was hit by the car and thrown toward the median wall where he died. The accident happened at about 6 a.m. After he was struck, almost a dozen other cars ended up smashing into each other in an effort to avoid the initial collision.
The victim, whose name and age has not been announced, died immediately. One other driver was taken to the hospital. There is still no information on why the man was trying to cross the highway during busy traffic.
Fire and rescue responded to the scene and had to shut down Eastbound traffic in I-20 for almost four hours. The lanes finally reopened at about 10 a.m.
In accidents like this, it can be unclear exactly what caused the crash. No charges have been filed so clearly they don’t suspect any wrongdoing on the part of the driver who hit the man.
These accidents can be complicated and very difficult to unravel. For the other cars involved in the wreck, they’re going to want someone to cover the damage to their cars. And, for the other driver who was taken to the hospital, they’ll likely expect to have their medical bills covered.
Atlanta car accident lawyers deal with multi-car accidents all the time but rarely one involving more than 10 cars. It could take months to really figure out who will bear the brunt of liability here.
