About North Carolina Highway 16
NC 16 starts in the middle of Waxhaw and goes north until it reaches Charlotte, where it is known as Providence Road. It then goes northwest, exiting the city as Brookshire Boulevard. The highway passes the Catawba River and as a rural freeway, travels through Gaston, Lincoln, and Catawba counties. After Conover, it becomes a two-lane road across Alexander and Wilkes counties, as well as Ashe County and Jefferson. It goes north again, and finally enters the Commonwealth of Virginia, in the vicinity of Grassy Creek, where it becomes Virginia State Route 16.
North Carolina Highway 16 Accidents
NC 16 passes through numerous cities and towns, and one of these is Charlotte, North Carolina’s largest city and the third most dangerous city for driving. Some 600 crashes on state routes occurred in Charlotte in 2012 alone, according to the Highway Safety Research Center at the University of North Carolina.
Within and outside Charlotte, accidents of various severities take place on NC 16. Among the most recent ones was a wreck that caused a vehicle to go into a ditch in Denver, and another accident that required an injured victim to be airlifted to the Carolinas Medical Center.
Some usual causes of highway crashes are speeding, distracted driving, and road hazards. Injuries often result, but even if they are common, they can be devastating as they result in traumatic brain injury, spinal cord damage, and broken bones.
