Fatal Car Accidents in North Carolina
Each year, over 40,000 lives are tragically lost in motor vehicle accidents across the United States, with many occurring right here in our state. These incidents result in immeasurable grief as families grapple with the profound loss of loved ones due to avoidable collisions on our roads.
The aftermath of losing a family member in a car accident is an indescribable sorrow that no one should have to endure. However, it’s crucial to recognize that legal recourse may offer avenues for seeking justice and recompense.
After a fatal crash, grieving families retain the option to file a wrongful death claim against the responsible party. This legal recourse seeks to address various financial burdens, including:
- Funeral Costs: Compensation covers reasonable expenses for funeral and burial services, including costs for the casket, cremation (if applicable), funeral service fees, transportation, and burial plots.
- Lost Earnings: This includes compensation for the income the deceased was earning at the time of their death and projected future earnings they would have made. Factors considered include the deceased’s age, health, life expectancy, current job and salary, and potential for future income growth.
- Loss of Consortium: Damages awarded to surviving family members for the loss of love, companionship, comfort, guidance, and support that the deceased provided. These intangible damages recognize the emotional and psychological impact of the loss beyond financial contributions.
