The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) serves over 400 square miles in North Carolina. Prior to the Charlotte and Mecklenburg polices departments merging in 1993, the two cities maintained separate police forces. 

Over 13 separate patrols districts fall under CMPD’s jurisdiction. The department serves Charlotte and the unincorporated areas of Mecklenburg County. The Office of the Chief of Police contains five (5) deputy chiefs. The chiefs each lead major service groups. These major service groups include the following: 

  • Administrative Service Group which oversees training, crime analysis and communications;
  • Investigative Service Group encompasses all felony investigative units; 
  • Two Field Service Groups that oversee field officers; and 
  • Special Service Group. This group oversees the Special Operations Bureau and Lab and Evidence Bureau.

CMPD is accredited through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA).

The Charlotte Fire Department

No matter what city you live in, you want to know that you can rely on a fully-equipped fire department. The Charlotte Fire Department delivers multiple services to the city, including:

Historic Rosedale Plantation

The Historic Rosedale Plantation is one of Charlotte’s “best-kept secret.” The sprawling 911-acre plantation boasts a house and many beautiful gardens. The property and the buildings were originally owned by merchant, postmaster, and tax collector, Archibald Frew. Frew built the plantation in 1815. Visitors to the Plantation can take part in guided tours of the 15-room antebellum period home turned museum. Tickets are just $10.73 for adults and $8.58 for children. 

President James K. Polk Historic Site

The President James K. Polk Historic Site is located on land that was actually owned by the 11th President of the United States. This site includes vital and interesting information about Polk’s time serving the American people as President. The site also features reconstructions of buildings that one could have found in Polk’s time, such as a log house with a separate kitchen. The barn and the other buildings are all bedecked with historically accurate furnishings for the era.

Levine Museum of the New South

The Levine Museum of the New South is located at 200 E. 7th St. It’s a wonderful place for your family to enjoy a fun and educational family. The Levine Museum features over a thousand artifacts, images, videos, music, and other exhibits. Throughout the year, the Levine museum features various exhibits that are intended to evoke emotion and educate the public. Adult admission is just $9. Senior citizens and children aged 6 to 18 enjoy reduced admission of just $7 and $5 respectively. Children under five (5) are free. It’s an affordable place for your entire family to enjoy.

The Billy Graham Library

When people think of the strong Christian faith of the south, they think of Billy Graham. Graham’s spirit is alive and well in Charlotte, North Carolina. Visitors can browse Graham’s private library and enjoy books on a variety of religious subjects. Or, tour the faith-based leader’s Charlotte childhood home where he lived from the age of nine (9) until he left to go to college as a teenager. 

Latta Plantation

The Latta Planation is renowned for its regular re-enactment events and tours. This plantation gives you the chance to learn all about the Tarheel State. Explore the plantation home, the cook’s kitchen, and the smoke and well houses on the Tarheel Tour. Tickets are just $12 each and children five (5) and under get in free. It’s a good idea to call ahead and check availability for tours and other events since the Latta Plantation is such a popular tourist destination.
