Shelby, North Carolina, known as ‘The City of Pleasant Living’ is found where the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains meet the state’s thriving Piedmont Region. The iconic Cleveland County Courthouse in Shelby dates back to 1907. The structure has a neo-classical revival architecture that features beautiful ribbed domes, porticoes to the front and a stunning cupola. Together, these features give the Courthouse its imposing and grand outlook. The style and outlook of the building is reminiscent of the Beaux-Arts period. H.L. Lewman is credited with the design of this building. A grand sum of $75,000 was used to erect the building at the time. It remains one of the most notable historical attractions in Shelby.

SHELBY DMV’S

The city of Shelby is home to three separate DMV locations. If you wish to get your driver’s license and take the requisite tests, you can visit the License Office at the Dixon Boulevard. For new vehicle registration or registration renewal, you can utilize the services at the Vehicle & License plate office at Morgan Street. To report problems with your license or theft issues, you can visit the third DMV location, also situated at the Dixon Boulevard.

The Shelby Police Department serves around 20,000 residents of the city as well as the visitors or tourists. The department prides itself in respond to the service calls from citizens on an urgent basis. For this purpose, the department has a separate Communications Center which is tasked with processing all the 9-1-1 calls originating from inside the city.

The Fire & Rescue Department offers a broad range of public safety services to the people of the city of Shelby. The department is home to the Fire Marshal’s Office. The Marshal’s Office is tasked with ensuring compliance with fire prevention regulations at both residential and commercial buildings. The Marshal’s Office is also tasked with undertaking initiatives to educate the public about fire hazards and preventive practices.

The broader services offered by the Department include urban-rural interface firefighting, fire suppression at all types of structures, fire-rescue in the event of a plane crash, mitigation and containment of hazardous materials as well as emergency medical care and technical aid.

The Department operates from 3 main fire stations which are manned by the firefighting personnel 24 hours a day. This ensures that the Fire Department is able to respond to any and all emergency fire-related hazards anywhere in the city.

SHELBY LIBRARIES

The Cleveland County Library System is a public educational resource that has served the city of Shelby for well over a century. The library system is around 107 years old and has remained one of the most cherished treasures of the city residents. The network operates through two key facilities: the Spangler Branch Library and the Cleveland County Memorial Library.

The Memorial Library sprawls over an area of 27,000 square feet and is home to around 190,000 books. In addition, the library also hosts a number of state-of-the-art facilities including a playroom, history room, meeting rooms, and public computers. A vast repository of audio and video materials is also accessible at the Memorial Library. The library is located on the Howie Drive in Shelby. The Spangler Branch Library is situated in Lawndale.
