About Interstate 440
I-440 starts at I-40, near Rock Quarry Road, and runs east to west. It arcs north of downtown Raleigh, intersecting with thoroughfares such as the Raleigh-Chapel Hill Expressway, US 401, and US 70. I-440 then heads back to I-40, near Buck Jones Road where it ends.
The highway was formerly a complete loop that partly ran along I-40 south of the city’s downtown area. However, in 2002, I-440 was truncated to avoid confusion with another loop, I-540.
