Fatal Auto Accidents in North Carolina
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that in 2021, the United States witnessed approximately 42,915 fatalities due to traffic accidents. This marks a 10.5% surge from the figures of 2020, constituting the most significant yearly increase since the inception of the Fatality Analysis Reporting System. The predominant factors contributing to these fatal incidents in 2021 included:
- Distracted Driving: Lack of attention to the driving task is a critical hazard. Drivers distracted by activities such as texting, talking on the phone, or adjusting the radio may fail to notice other vehicles or pedestrians, significantly increasing the risk of causing an accident.
- Impaired Driving: Operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol severely diminishes a driver’s capacity for responsible vehicle control. Such impairment affects judgment, coordination, and reaction times, often resulting in catastrophic collisions.
- Speeding: Exceeding speed limits not only raises the likelihood of accidents but also amplifies the severity of injuries sustained during crashes. The greater the speed at the time of impact, the more severe the potential for fatal outcomes.
