Fatal Pedestrian Accidents in South Carolina
Each year, the United States witnesses over 40,000 deaths due to motor vehicle accidents, and sadly, South Carolina sees its fair share of these tragic events. Many of these heartbreaking incidents involve pedestrians and can often be traced back to someone’s careless behavior on the road. The leading causes of these fatal incidents include:
- Failing to Yield: Failing to yield is one of the leading causes of pedestrian accidents in South Carolina. This occurs when drivers do not give the right of way to pedestrians at crosswalks or intersections, as required by law.
- Driving While Impaired: Impaired drivers may not notice pedestrians until it’s too late, or they might misjudge their speed or distance from people walking nearby.
- Driving Recklessly: Reckless driving includes a variety of dangerous behaviors such as speeding, aggressive maneuvers like swerving and unsafe lane changes, and not paying attention to traffic signs or road conditions. These actions can be particularly hazardous for pedestrians.
These actions, among others, are responsible for too many losses of life in our state each year.
