Ayden, NC (March 21, 2024) – On Saturday, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol confirmed that one person died as a result of a fatal accident that was reported in Ayden. The accident occurred at around 9:20 p.m. on March 16.
According to official reports, a Winterville police officer was attempting to stop a southbound vehicle that was traveling at a high rate of speed on North Carolina Highway 11. The vehicle was said to match the description of a vehicle that was involved in a domestic assault. The driver initially pulled over to the shoulder before speeding away. The suspect ran a red light at the intersection of North Carolina Highway 11 and North Carolina Highway 102.
As a result, the vehicle collided with a passenger car. The vehicle then proceeded forward across the median and collided with an SUV head-on. The impact of the crash caused one vehicle to catch on fire. One person involved in the accident suffered fatal injuries and was immediately pronounced deceased on site. One additional person was injured and transported to ECU Health Medical Center for emergency treatment. At this time, the incident is under investigation.
