Gaffney, SC (July 12, 2024) – A motor vehicle accident reported in Gaffney claimed one person’s life. Officials in Cherokee County were called to the scene of the crash just before 7:00 p.m. on July 10.
Official reports indicate that a tractor-trailer rig was traveling northbound on Interstate 85. As the vehicle proceeded through a construction zone near mile marker 96, he became involved in a collision. The tractor-trailer went through the guard rail and entered the opposite side of the roadway, where it collided with a second tractor-trailer and a 2021 Nissan Rogue Sport. The driver of the SUV became trapped inside their vehicle and had to be extricated by firefighters. Despite medical efforts, the driver of the Nissan was pronounced deceased at the scene as a result of their injuries. Authorities identified the victim as 73-year-old Donald Charles Harwood. The drivers of both tractor-trailers sustained injuries in the accident. Both victims were transported to area hospitals. At this time, the incident is under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
