Fatal Motorcycle Accidents in North Carolina
Statistics show that more than 6000 people died as a result of motorcycle accidents across the United States in 2022. Many of these accidents take place due to preventable circumstances. Motorcycle accidents, especially those leading to fatalities, can often be attributed to the actions of other drivers on the road. Some of the leading factors include:
- Failure to Yield: Not giving right of way at intersections is a leading cause of motorcycle accidents.
- Left Turns in Front of Motorcyclists: Misjudging the speed or not noticing an oncoming motorcycle when making a left turn is a frequent occurrence.
- Lane Changes Without Checking Blind Spots: Motorcycles can easily be hidden in a vehicle’s blind spot, making them susceptible to being hit during lane changes.
- Following Too Closely: Tailgating a motorcycle does not leave enough stopping distance, increasing the risk of rear-ending the motorcyclist.
- Distracted Driving: Texting, talking on the phone, or any activity taking the driver’s focus off the road can lead to catastrophic outcomes for motorcyclists.
- Driving Under the Influence: Impaired driving reduces reaction times and impairs judgment, significantly increasing the risk of hitting a motorcycle.
- Speeding: Excessive speed reduces the available time to react to motorcycles’ movements, leading to severe accidents.
- Road Rage or Aggressive Driving: Aggressive maneuvers around motorcycles can result in the motorcyclist losing control.
Compared to other types of motorists, motorcyclists are more vulnerable due to the fact that they are unprotected. As a result, the consequences of these actions can be devastating, leaving families to cope with the sudden loss of a loved one.
