Knightdale, NC (March 4, 2024) – A retired police officer lost his life following a motor vehicle accident on Friday in Knightdale. The accident was reported to law enforcement at approximately 9:45 p.m. on Interstate 540.
According to police reports, a 55-year-old man was exiting his van to re-hitch a trailer that he was towing on the interstate when he was struck by a vehicle near the overpass at Lynnwood Road. The pedestrian, who was identified as retired Raleigh Police Sgt. Kenneth Hopkins, sustained severe injuries. He was rushed to an area hospital, where he died from his injuries. At this time, the police department is investigating the accident.
