Sumter Co., SC (December 7, 2023) – A multivehicle accident reported in Sumter County claimed one person’s life. Authorities confirmed that 39-year-old Merrill Lonjin Jr. lost his life as a result of a fatal collision that occurred on Pinewood Road.
Investigations determined that Lonjin was driving westbound on Pinewood Road in a 2011 Mercury SUV at around 4:00 a.m. For unknown reasons, the vehicle collided head-on with the 2021 Toyota sedan near Starks Ferry Road. The Toyota then collided with a 2019 Jeep SUV, which was also traveling east through the intersection.
Lonjin became trapped inside of his vehicle. Authorities arrived at the scene to remove the victim. However, authorities confirmed that the victim suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The Toyota driver was injured in the accident and transported to an area hospital for emergency care. No one in the Jeep was injured. At this time, the South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating to determine what caused this accident to take place.
