Davidson Co., NC (May 4, 2024) – A fatal crash reported in Davidson County claimed the lives of two men. The incident occurred at around 3:00 a.m. on May 2.
According to official reports, a 1997 Ford pickup truck towing a trailer was traveling southbound on Interstate 85. At the same time, a 2002 Ford pickup truck was also traveling in the same direction on the road. As the vehicles moved forward, the driver of the 2002 Ford failed to slow down and collided with the 1997 Ford’s trailer. The impact of the crash caused the 1997 Ford to go off the roadway and overturn before colliding with a tree. The 2002 Ford then went off the left side of the roadway and collided with a tree.
Two people involved in the crash sustained fatal injuries. The victims, identified as 61-year-old Mark Hughes and 68-year-old Alan Wendell Sanderson, were both pronounced deceased. The driver of the 2002 Ford, identified as 48-year-old Jerry Dan Surratt II, was transported to Atrium Heath Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for the treatment of serious injuries. At this time, investigations into the crash are ongoing.
We hope Jerry Dan Surratt II recovers quickly from his injuries.
Our sympathies go out to the families of Mark Hughes and Alan Wendell Sanderson.
Fatal Accidents in North Carolina
Every year, the United States faces the heart-wrenching reality of losing over 40,000 individuals to motor vehicle accidents. Our state, sadly, shares in this national grief, with more than 1,000 families affected annually by such tragedies. The year 2022 marked a particularly sorrowful period, recording upwards of 1,700 lives lost on our roads due to vehicle collisions. In the aftermath of these devastating events, the families of the victims are presented with the possibility of filing a wrongful death claim against those found responsible. This legal avenue aims to provide them with financial compensation for a variety of losses:
- Medical Bills: Families can seek reimbursement for any medical costs incurred as a result of the accident prior to their loved one’s death.
- Funeral and Burial Expenses: Compensation is available to cover the costs associated with funeral services and burial or cremation.
- Lost Wages and Earning Capacity: This includes the deceased’s expected earnings over a lifetime, offering financial support for dependents left behind.
- Loss of Services and Support: Compensation can include the value of the services, care, and support the deceased would have provided to their family.
- Loss of Inheritance: Reflects the potential savings and assets the deceased would have likely accumulated and passed on to heirs.
To ensure families receive the compensation they rightfully deserve, working with a wrongful death lawyer in North Carolina can be critical.
